APViewer 1.3.2 uploaded

I have just uploaded APViewer 1.3.2 to AppStore, it is being reviewed at the moment. You should be able to download the new version in a day or two. It is now compatible with iOS11.

There are no functionality changes. There are some improvement on usability and interface.

I will be adding some new features in the next few months.

  2. Hi there! App was working great for a long time (at least a year, I think) then the new update of a few weeks ago crashed it.

It now crashes every few minutes.

Running an older iPad with iOS 9.3.5.

Hope to see it fixed soon!

    1. HI Jeffrey,

Thanks for reporting the issue. I have just released version 1.3.4 that attempts to fix some issues with crashes. Can you please try it out and let me know if it works?

    2. Hello again! I have updated the app and tried it out. But, unfortunately, it still crashes after a few minutes...

      Any thoughts?

    3. Hi,

I have tried it on an iPad 2 running iOS 9.3.5 and it seems fine. I am also unable to find any crash reports for version 1.3.4 at the moment. I will check again tomorrow.

Meanwhile, if you could provide me some more information it would help me to narrow down the possible causes.

1, Have you recently imported any photos that are large?
      2) Any particular step that can consistently crash the app? (e.g, while importing, while unzipping files, while editing, while playing slideshow, etc)
      3) Do you have sufficient storage space on your iPad?

      Thanks.

    4. Hello again! Thanks for the fast reply.

Here's some more information. I hope it helps.
I'm also running an iPad 2 with iOS 9.3.5.

I have plenty of space on the iPad as it is ONLY being used to display pictures.

The crashes occur while playing the slideshow.

The largest pictures I add are 8-9 MB (each), but the average is probably closer to 6 or 7. This is because newer cameras are storing much larger images (16 megapixels, 20 megapixels, etc.)

However, last year I was still displaying 9-10MB images with the app and had no problems.

From the "user experience" end, it worked fine -- perfectly fine (running 12 hours a day EVERY day for over a year) -- until the update at the end of September. Then suddenly it started crashing (with the same photo set!).

If there's any more information I can provide, I'd be happy to help. Love the app.

      Cheers and thank you,
      Jeffrey

    5. Hi Jeffrey,

I think that does explain one potential problem with bigger images. I had to rewrite the app due to iOS 10/11 changes.

In the process, I have removed an optimisation that was done for older phones/tablet (iPad 1 or iPhone 3GS), as it would no longer be required for newer iPad or iPhone. Aside from the, the old implementation caused information lost on the image (if you download it from iPhone/iPad back to your computer).

As a result, the import process become faster, but the image will be shown as original size, instead of optimised size.

I will be adding a part to optimise the image before display (instead of during import like the old version). Please let me know if that works (will be version 1.3.5, should be available in a day or two).

    6. Thank you very much for your continued efforts!

From my own limited understanding of your app, would the removed optimisation cause the app to crash completely?

If, in the near future, I continue to experience difficulties with this app, would it be possible to receive a copy of an older version from you via email? The edition that was available until the end of September worked perfectly for my needs (I'm ONLY using the iPad to run your app, so I can safely turn off auto-update).

      More appreciatively yours,
      Jeffrey

    7. Hi,

The new version is available now.

Basically what happen is that the old version resize the image before storing. So even if you import a large image (say 8000x6000 image), the app actually resized it to around 2400x1800 or so. Without the optimisation, the device will run out of memory and the app will be killed by the operating system.

It wouldn't be too much of an issue to not resizing an image in the newer iPhone or iPad. However, it is an issue on older iPhone/iPad that there is very limited memory. So without resizing, a 8000x6000 picture will take about 180MB memory, which is a problem for older iPhone/iPad.

    8. Hello again!

The latest update appears to be working. So far so good! Thank you!

But, just a note from a "user experience" point of view, there's now a short BLACK-SCREEN pause before the new picture appears (during the optimization, I suppose).

Is it possible to optimize the "next picture" while the current picture is being displayed? I suspect that would get rid of the little black "flash", though I don't know how much work that would be as a programmer.

Thank you again. It works without crashing!

      Cheers and thanks,
      Jeffrey

  4. Hi,
Unfortunately for me, the app still crashes on launch with versions 1.3.4 and 1.3.5.
The screen turns black (the time and battery indicator are the only things visible) and after exactly 20 seconds I’m back to the home screen.
I have a 2nd generation 12.9’’ iPad Pro running iOS 11.0.1. I tried removing the app to reinstall it but it’s the same.
The app was password protected before the upgrade if it helps.

    1. Hi Patrice,

Let me do some investigation. I do not have an iPad Pro to test, but I will see what I can do find out what the problem is.

    2. Hi Patrice,

Just wondering if you could provide me a little bit more information.

Since you have tried removing the app and reinstall, the app is practically reset, it does seems weird that it doesn't run at all. At the very least, it seems to work on my simulator.

1, Have you tried to launch the app right after download?
2, I would assume you do have enough storage on your iPad?
3, Are you using Split View or any multitasks option on iPad Pro?

  5. Hi,
Sorry for the late reply, I was away for a few days and without my Mac to backup.
The good new is: I've completely removed and reinstalled the app and its data and it now works again! :) (what I had previously tried was to remove only the app as iOS 11 now allows but not the data because I didn't want to lose it).
So there must have been something corrupted there.
To answer your questions if it can help:
    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. No it was one app full screen only, mainly in landscape orientation

I'll also remove my bad review on the AppStore ;)
Thanks for helping me with the issue.

  6. Oh, and while I'm at it: a cool option would be to be able to use a random order in the slideshow mode! :)

  7. Hello Shadow. Glad to see you responding to comments on your post so regularly.

I've been using APV for months, and I find it to be absolutely easy to use, and would replace the default photos App in iOS if I could. Would you take a look at the following two points and see if you can incorporate them into you app? Personally, I believe it'd make your app even more user friendly.
    01. The ability to play gifs along with jpg and png. I have albums of both jpgs and gifs loaded up, and the app now just ignores the gifs.
    02. The ability to delete each picture from that screen itself, using a button at a corner, without having to backtrack and select pictures before deleting them. Would make for much easier navigation, especially if when a picture is deleted in full screen, the next picture should come up to take its place.

Please let me know if these can be realistically done .

    1. Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the feedback. I will look into supporting gif images, as well as the ability to edit an image (including delete) when viewing

  8. Thanks a lot for this wonderful app! I just love it...

I would have just one request: the ability to zoom in further in high res photos. When using two fingers, you can zoom in a far as you can spread your fingers, but the zoom "pops" back on releasing your fingers from the screen. But that's all...

    1. I have made it to zoom in up to 2 times the device size. I can see if I can make it dynamic based on the image. As I am a bit busy with other stuff at the moment, the update might be a bit slow.

  10. Love the app, especially the ability to have folders & subfolders.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a new issue using the app on my (admittedly dated) iPad Air since I updated to iOS 12.2.2 yesterday. When clicking on a thumbnail, the full size photo seems to be slow to open — sometimes very slow to open.

I’ve closed all the apps, then shutdown & restarted the iPad. The problem is still apparent.

Please try updating & see if you have the problem as well.

    Thanks, Alan

  11. I like APViewer very much, but I do have one problem: I accidentally uploaded some TIFF files using iTunes File Sharing. Now I can't view the files within the app, and I can't delete them. I don't mind that I can't view them, but it seems to me that uploading unviewable files ought to be blocked or there ought to be a way to delete them.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. I have forgotten to renew my apple developer account. I have just done that, the app should be available soon.

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to do any sort of update on the app for the last few years,

  13. Hi

Great and simple to use app.

I am looking to use this to allow guests to view and choose photos during dance festivals.

I wondered if there was a way to turn off the photo sharing options, mainly the airdrop one and email one.

Also, album folder images bring generated by the first photo.

I know there has not been an update for a while, but thought I would ask.

    Thanks

    Bruce

  14. Hi there! I know this is super random and I’m posting on a very old post, I just couldn’t find any other way to contact the developer of APViewer! Is there any possibility of this app being updated to continue working with current versions of IOS? This is the only app that works my disabled brother - it just has the right capabilities we’re after for him and he’s been using it for years! It lets him have his huge collection of photos organised into albums, but stops him from accidentally hitting the delete button (our problem with most photo apps). It’s has a lot more scope/capability that most “kids” photo apps, which are too limited for us. At this stage we’ve avoided updating his iPad to the newest IOS because the app will no longer be compatible, but this isn’t really a long term solution. We are literally willing to pay you to keep it going for us, even if we’re the only ones using it haha! That’s how much we love this app!!
